How Chisago Age Well began
In 2016, a collaboration of agencies, service organizations and businesses serving older adults formed the Chisago Age Well Coalition. Thanks to a grant from Leading Age Minnesota, coordinated through the Central Minnesota Council on Aging, the Coalition was able to provide older adults in southern Chisago County and their caregivers with educational programs and helpful information about resources available to help them age well in their homes and community. A highlight of their efforts was a series of popular quarterly programs known as “Dine and Discover.”
In October 2019, Chisago Age Well hosted its first Age Well Expo. While the Covid pandemic hampered Chisago Age Well programming throughout most of 2020 and early 2021, planning and communication continued with the help of technology. Age Well hosted virtual Dine & Discover programs in collaboration with North Branch Community Education.
Businesses and organizations involved with the Age Well Coalition continue to meet semi-monthly, working together to share ideas and information.
Age Well achieves nonprofit status
Chisago Age Well is now operating as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation with its own board of directors, moving forward with programs to serve older adults throughout Chisago County. “Nonprofit status qualifies Chisago Age Well to seek grants and donations to help fund our work,” explains Board member Rahsa Bale of Second Harvest Heartland, “and to continue to offer free or low-cost programs, information and resources for older adults in
Chisago County with the help of local sponsors and dedicated volunteers.” “The needs of older adults will continue to grow,” said Bale. “As a nation, we are aging. By 2035, one fifth of Americans will be 65 and older. The good news is that when we work together to make life better for older adults, we improve community life for people of all ages.”
